Holistic Wellness

Carl W. Brown "Muscle Whisperer"

Bodywork is a broader term that includes massage as well as many other forms of touched based therapy.  I started out doing bodywork and learned massage to get certified.  I found that studying and practicing bodywork opened my eyes to my intrinsic powers.  It was more like remembering than learning.   It has been a journey of discovery.   As a result I work holistically combining the intuitive with an anatomically detailed set of skills.   Results will vary by person and I hope that this web site will help you make an informed decision as to whether to try my work.

By offering somatic bodywork we provide an alternative approach to traditional massage therapy.  We incorporate techniques using anatomically based practices that correct many chronic problems involving pain, range of motion and repetitive strain with a calm and relaxing massage.  Working to help the body heal itself, we use finesse over force so as not to insult the tissues that we are attempting to heal.   This provides a more lasting effect and allows us to work at finer level to get at the real source of the problem.  Most of the work feels more like gentle stretching that allows the muscles to release like melting butter.  Some corrective work involves firmer work.  We will tell you if the manipulation might be painful.   In any case it would be quick and you will feel much better afterwards. We often combine the bodywork with heat using hot stones, which not only heats the muscles, but provides a very satisfying stimulation of the skin as well.  Normally most of the bodywork is done fully clothed.  Hot stone treatments normally require that the person be modestly draped.  This is because this technique uses lotions on the skin and stone to provide a more even heat conduction. The stones can also be used through clothes to provide muscle relaxing heat during sessions that only employ the subtle bodywork without oils or lotions.

Like traditional medicine the bodywork often employs techniques that fix problems and often that is necessary to get past problems allowing you to achieve a better state of wellness.  This work however integrates better into holistic practices even though it deals with very detailed anatomical work.  This is because it is often integrated with holistic perceptions.

Coming for a scientific bent I often find that what I do myself sometimes stretches my credulity.  However this is learning to trust in what works even if you can not explain it scientifically.  Learning that the universe is far more complex than science can explain and at the same time knowing when using science is appropriate.  It is establishing a balance between the two.  It is like learning to see the shadowy shapes at the edge of vision.  It is the humility of knowing that you are not all knowing and powerful and are not able to say with certainty what is and is not true.   This egoless openness gives you power that few people posses.  It is the power of love, giving and service that trumps the power of possessing.
